Economic Forum in Davos: Capitalism Must Be Redesigned

Capitalism must be redesigned to better serve the society and education and creativity need special attention.

Capitalism disappointed the society because of increasing income inequality and high unemployment, especially among young people, said Sharan Burrow, the Secretary General of the International Confederation of Trade Unions, based in Brussels.

The business community has lost its “moral compass,” said Burrow. “We need to redesign the model. We need to reset it. Stop the greed. If employers, workers and governments do not discuss, capitalism will continue to disappoint,” she added.

While the way the business community fulfills its social responsibilities is a matter of debate, efforts are needed so that capitalism is accurate and better serve the society, according to a release of the Forum, after the debate on capitalism organized by a magazine.

Other participants in the debate have not agreed on how the business community has fulfilled its responsibilities to society. “The business community has not lost its moral compass. Capitalism may be the worst possible system except all the others,” said David M. Rubenstein, cofounder and chief operating officer at the Carlyle Group.

Companies do not think how to reduce the number of wealth and jobs, he said. To ensure a fair capitalism, we should pay more attention to laws and regulations, investments in education, promoting creativity and innovation. Increasing inequities is caused not by bad policies of the companies, but “more powerful forces” such as technological development, the emergence of global markets and the need for innovation, said Raghuram G. Rajan, professor at Booth School of Business at the University of Chicago. These forces increase the demand for highly qualified employees and push up their income, he said.
